Wrestling Photo shoot

I used the photography studio at the college to photograph my final piece for my major project. I used my own digital Canon DLSR and a range of lighting techiques. With the help of a student who is also a professional wrester I was able to photograph my jacket as well as demonstrate the contrasts between in ring and out of ring personas, gimmicks duality and contrasts that were the project themes. Post shoot I used Photoshop to enhance and to add special effects to the photographs again to emphasis the project themes.

Finished Custom Jacket

For the leather pieces I used fabric glue to stick them to the denim jacket, I also added some tooth ribs, repeat pattern stars and demonic writing to the jacket along with more metal studs for better effect.

The colours of the jacket were centred around the Persona 5 Video Game which uses a red, black and white colour scheme. I also used some of the shapes from the game like the stars on the front of the jacket but also the zigzag line that goes across the shoulders which is from the victory screen.

The front and back logo were designed in Illustrator and were laser cut out on leather and glued to the front and back of the jacket with fabric glue, the back logo of a city was based on Manchester city skyline as this was the nearest big city to me. the front logo was based on a number of things like Kenny Omega for the wings as one of his moves is called One Winged Angle so I added angle wings to the piece, I also looked at the video game Final Fantasy VII and the main protagonist Cloud and his sword the Buster Sword and the font was inspired by The Terminator font from the poster for the film.

Front Logo Design for Jacket

For the front logo I took Inspiration from Final Fantasy, Terminator, Kenny Omega and Super Smash Bros style.

Final Fantasy Inspiration:

I took inspiration from the video game Final Fantasy and the main character from the game Cloud. I looked at multiple things for ideas for the front logo design, this was because I wanted it to look more face (good guy) looking logo as it would create a contrast between the front and the back of the jacket as the front represents a face (good) character and the back represents a heel (bad) character. I looked at Kenny Omega who loves games and decided to look at protagonists in video games for ideas inspiration, I ultimately found Cloud from Final Fantasy video games and really liked the sword design and pulled inspiration from another wrestler logo Seth Rollins.

I another inspiration for the logo was from Kenny Omega and Super Smash Bros, For the wings of the logo I draw ideas for Kenny Omega’s Finisher One Winged Angle, I also looked at Super Smash Bros character Pit as he has wings. Ultimately I wanted wings as it implies that the front of the jacket is angle and the back of the jacket is a demon which is another contrast.

For the font of the logo I turned to Kenny Omega once again as he has used multiple video game style fonts, however I found a great font from the Terminator Movie which I chose to use not only because it look bold and striking but also because there is a contrast/something hidden in the Terminator movie as the machine is hidden under the human look.

Final Design Logo:

Inspiration for My Jacket Design

I was inspired by the wresting vest style used by the Young Bucks wrestling team. The aspects I liked were the logos, tassels and studs because I liked the contrasting colours of the yellow, black and purple.

I used this jacket as inspiration for my project. I liked the mix of wrestling gimmick combined with references to rock music as Chris Jericho also has a rock band called Fozzy. What I liked about this jacket was the use of spray paint and studs which added a rebellious punk style. I was inspired by the use of spray paint on the leather jacket and how it had been customised to suit his character.

The person in the centre of the photograph is Cody a wrestler who persona is ‘The American Nightmare’. His looked influenced my project as I liked the small details that were on his wrestling vest as the colours and details were references from the
Jackson Jaguars American football team. Although this looked quite plain compared to some of the other wrestling wear I was inspired by this to incorporate small detailed sections into my jacket project and to use the idea of a colour theme and subtle hints to my overall style and inspiration which was the ‘Persona 5’ game.

This image of the Spider Punk jacket helped me to figure out how I eventually wanted my jacket to look of denim instead of leather and the use of metal studs.

Persona 5
Persona 5 art style/colour

These 4 images 3 of which are from the Persona 5 game and 1 which is the Spiderman drawn using the visual style of Person 5 influenced my jacket with the red, black and white colour scheme. Also I was inspired by the blending of Manga, Anime, graffiti and old style comic book art in the decorative patterning and lettering.

The 2 video links talk about the arts style and colours and how they are used effectively to create a bold and eyecatching art style for the game. This was something that I wanted for my jacket and influenced me to keep to a restricted colour pallet.

Hannah Horror’s customised jackets inspired me with the amount of detail that she uses making use of all the available space on the jacket.

Sarth Ton makes customised wrestling gear however I felt that his pieces were too broad for what I wanted to do. A lot of his gear is based of Marvel characters and some of the other ware did not resonate with me as it was more ‘blingy’ and looked too polished and new for the theme I was looking to create.

I like Japanese culture and follow these Japanese video game creators as I find their art work interesting. This influenced me to keep some aspects of the jacket subtle and to think about including aspects that hinted towards the wrestling character as Hideo Kojima does with protagonist in ‘Death Stranding’ and many of his other games. In this the viewer does not know everything about the character at first and it is revealed slowly through the progress of the story. I liked this idea and thought it could work for my jacket if I could add subtle hints to the origin and influences of the jacket.
